How to Reduce Acidity in Mouth

How to Reduce Acidity in Mouth:

Acidity is a kind of illness you have to face several times in your life. The Acidity word is directly related to acid. The food and drink you take have some portion of acid that enters your body. The amount of acid should remain normal in your mouth; otherwise, it can turn into acidity in the mouth. Your day to day diet is an essential factor that affects the level of acid in your body and mouth.

You can get affected by the acidity of your mouth by eating something acidic or acid reflux in your stomach. Acid reflux is also known as GERD or gastroesophageal reflux. The acid comes upwards from your stomach to your chest, throat, and finally into your mouth in this condition. This is very harmful to your teeth and overall oral health.

pH Level Chart and Its Effects

The acid or alkaline level in the mouth is computed on the pH scale from 1 to 14. When the pH level is 7, it is called Neutral. When the pH level is below 7, it is called acidic, i.e., acidity in the mouth. And when it’s above 7, it means it’s alkaline. If you have 14 pH levels, then it means your mouth condition is the most alkaline. Here we provide the pH level chart and its effects as under:

pH Level Its Effect
pH 0 Battery Acid
pH 1 Stomach Acid
pH 2 Lemon Juice, Vinegar
pH 3 Orange Juice, Soda, Dental Rinses
pH 4 Tomato Juice, Beer
pH 5 Black Coffee
pH 6 Saliva, Cow’s Milk
pH 7 Pure Water
pH 8 Sea Water, Ph-Neutralizing Dental Rinses
pH 9 Baking Soda
pH 10 Antacids
pH 11 Antacids, Dental Treatment Rinses
pH 12 Soapy Water
pH 13 and pH 14 Very Very High Alkaline

The 7 pH level at 7 is Neutral like pure water. An adult human body has around 60 percent water, the heart & brain have 73 percent water, the muscles have 79 percent water, and the teeth have 31 percent water. So you need to maintain your pH level close to 7 to keep your teeth (oral health) and yourself healthy for a long time.

What is Acidity in Mouth?

Sugar is often considered bad for oral health, but acid is also equally harmful. When the level of acid gets higher in your mouth, it creates many problems. Such a condition or state is known as the acidity in the mouth. It is not a life-threatening disease, but you have to pay attention to understand how to reduce acidity in the mouth and maintain your oral health.

Tooth Erosion and Acidity in Mouth

Tooth Erosion is a kind of teeth disease that happens for various reasons. The acidity in the mouth is one of the causes of tooth erosion. Everyone’s teeth have a protective surface, which is known as Enamel. When the level of acid increases in your mouth, the enamel wears away from your teeth. This condition is known as Tooth Erosion.

When the protective surface on teeth breaks down, it exposes your teeth and the underlying material called dentin. This makes your teeth ready for an attack by plaque and bacteria. As a result, you will get a mouth disease called tooth decay.

Causes of Acidity in Mouth

The acidity in the mouth can happen in two different ways, i.e., from the food & drink you take in a day and from the acid reflux in your stomach. If you often have acid reflux problems, then you need to consult your doctor. When the acid reflux is cured, it will automatically stop affecting your mouth.

If you don’t have an acid reflux problem, your eating and drinking habits are caused by your mouth’s acidity. Knowingly or unknowingly, you are taking acidic food or beverages, resulting in acidity in the mouth. Here we provide the list of such food, drinks and their effects as under:

  • Fruit Juice – The Apple, Lemon, Orange, and Cranberry are more acidic fruit juice options.
  • Citric Fruits – The Orange, Lemon, and Lime are three citric fruits containing acid elements.
  • Candy – All sugary sweets are harmful to your teeth and oral health. The sour gummies and candies have acid in them.
  • Sugar – Strangely, the sugar does not have much acid in itself, but it’s still harmful because the sugar encourages the growth of acid creating bacteria.
  • Wine – There are three different wines, i.e., rose, red, and white. Every time you drink wine, it softens (makes soft) your enamel. Enamel is the protective surface on your teeth. So the wine is harmful to your teeth as it has an acid element.

How to Reduce Acidity in Mouth

Acidity in Mouth is a condition when the amount and level of acid have been increased in the mouth. You need to get the acid level down and keep your teeth safe from acidic effects. To reduce acidity in the mouth, you need to take two major steps as mentioned below:

01. Clean Your Teeth and Mouth

When you have acidity in the mouth, your teeth are affected by the acid element. It is recommended to brush your teeth with the best electric toothbrush daily. It would be best to use the water flosser to floss your mouth and remove food debris between the teeth.

When you take the food or drink that contains acid, it will soften your enamel. So it is better not to brush your teeth up to half an hour after taking acidic food or drink. You can immediately wash your mouth with tap water and brush your teeth only after half an hour.

02. Change Your Diet (Food, Drinks, etc.)

This is an essential step for you to reduce acidity in the mouth in an effective way. It would be best to make the following changes to reduce and prevent the acidity in your mouth.

  • Reduce the consumption of food and drinks containing more acid.
  • Instead of taking acidic foods alone, you should take them with meals, i.e., with lunch or dinner. When you do this, the acidic food will come in less contact with your teeth as you are also eating other food together.
  • You should drink some water after every acidic food or drink. The water will wash it out from your teeth and reduce the chances of acidity in the mouth.
  • When you drink acidic beverages, you should use a straw. It will help you down the liquid and reduce acid contact with your teeth.
  • You should reduce your sugar consumption and prefer tea or coconut water. You can take sweet drinks with a label given as “sugar-free” to keep it down.

In this way, you can reduce the acidity in the mouth and keep yourself orally healthy.
